Hi fam,

Seeking folx getting it done. I’m so excited about what this community is building, how every small act of unconventional practice makes a difference. How every plant-based meal or item bought without packaging serves a purpose. It’s these acts of mindfulness that add up and truly make the difference. The spread of education and awareness moves everyone forward. Small moments deserve the spotlight. Like the vegan and gluten-free baker out of Chicago working hard to change what’s available in her neighborhood. Or the story behind a 200 year old apple tree and how grafting it’s delicate branches can save the fruit. I’m in love with these moments of mindfulness, of deep, detailed work that make a difference. Seek these moments out. Look to make your own small moment a reality and build from there.

Keep getting it done, y’all.

Betty Alper of Bot Bakery

Bot Bakery

I love everything about Betty Alper and what she stands for at her vegan and gluten-free shop, Bot Bakery. This beautifully done short film by Allie Kushiner, in her series entitled, The Ones That Will, gives a brief but meaningful look into Betty’s compassionate practice, despite her seemingly limiting dietary restrictions. If you’re in the Chicago area, I highly suggest getting a bite.

Future Fruit

If you’re not familiar with the work of sisters Sonya and Nina Montenegro of The Far Woods, do yourself a favor and scroll through all of their nature inspired pieces. Their most recent zine, Future Fruit, is a beautiful collaboration with Noah Calisch (Nina’s partner) all about grafting, through the lens of saving a 200 year old apple tree.(The digital download is only $9 y’all, so worth it!)

The Improvisational Kitchen

A favorite CLC article helping you get started with improvisational cooking. With a few basic tips and tricks you can build a resource index to help you use up whatever you have on hand. You’ll build up your resourcefulness, creativity, and general cooking prowess! I’d definitely call this a culinary superpower.
