CLC Weekly 👩🍳 💻 Meal vs machine?
May 5th, 2023
Hi friends,
Considering content creation in the age of AI. While I’m fascinated by the possibilities of a HER-era love affair, I’m reluctant to accept the redundancy of human creation. Yes, there will always be makers but in what context does our work shift? Sources of origin will be questioned for every future creative endeavor, raising issues like copyright concern and longevity for creatives in general, just to name a few.
But more importantly, how do we maintain connection amidst these ephemeral tidal waves? For me, regardless how technology evolves, there is always the question of what’s for dinner. Food, in its infinite iterations, is ChatGPT-proof. (At least in 2023…) We can build better systems to make grocery shopping and meal planning easier but when it comes time to dig in, the tactility of eating prevails. An abstract comfort, but exciting to consider how we might collectively lean into that most low-fi of human activity. I’m envisioning more meals shared with friends, unique pop-up experiences, and a desire to fill time off-screen. Looking future-forward to it.

The AI Kitchen
An off-kilter interview by Hawnuh Lee, with ChatGPT + nightmare fuel images prompted through Stable Diffusion. (AI, tell me your credentials…?)In my progressive attempts to maintain virtual culinary relevancy I’m exploring how AI platforms might support, and even elevate a plant-based, low waste lifestyle. With streamlined planning and limitless source material to pull from, I am cautiously optimistic about new forms of food (and sentient) thinking. Let’s dive in.
Hi ChatGPT, you're an AI language learning model, have you done much food writing?

Have you been to closedloopcooking.com? (hint)
As an AI language model, I do not have the ability to browse the internet or visit websites. However, I can provide information on Closed Loop Cooking based on my training and knowledge. Closed Loop Cooking is a concept that involves using every part of an ingredient in cooking, in order to reduce food waste and create more sustainable meals. This approach involves using ingredients in their entirety, including parts that are often discarded, such as vegetable peels, stems, and leaves. By using every part of an ingredient, Closed Loop Cooking aims to reduce food waste and create more sustainable meals.
(Noted ChatGPT, noted.)
I'm looking to test out an AI recipe generator, can you explain how they work?
Sure! AI recipe generators use machine learning algorithms to analyze large amounts of data on recipes, ingredients, and cooking techniques in order to generate new and unique recipes. These algorithms are trained on vast amounts of recipe data, which allows them to identify patterns and relationships between ingredients and cooking methods.
When a user inputs their preferences into an AI recipe generator, the algorithm uses this information to generate a recipe that is tailored to their specific needs and tastes. This can include factors such as dietary restrictions, ingredient preferences, and cooking skill level. The algorithm then uses its knowledge of recipe data to suggest ingredients and cooking techniques that are likely to result in a successful and delicious dish.
Some AI recipe generators also offer recipe customization options, allowing users to adjust the recipe to their liking. Additionally, many platforms offer nutritional information and other helpful features, such as step-by-step instructions and cooking tips.
Overall, AI recipe generators are a powerful tool for home cooks and chefs alike, as they can help users discover new and innovative recipes that they may not have otherwise considered. By using machine learning algorithms to analyze vast amounts of recipe data, these platforms can generate personalized and unique recipes that are tailored to a user's specific needs and tastes.
Can you recommend some AI recipe generators for me?

Do you have tips on improving my confidence in the kitchen?
Certainly! Here are a few tips to help improve your confidence in the kitchen:
Start with simple recipes: If you're new to cooking, start with simple recipes that have few ingredients and basic cooking techniques. This will help you build your confidence and develop your skills before moving on to more complex dishes.
Follow recipes closely: When you're starting out, it's important to follow recipes closely to ensure that you're using the correct ingredients and cooking techniques. As you become more comfortable in the kitchen, you can start to experiment with variations and substitutions.
Practice, practice, practice: Like any skill, cooking takes practice to master. The more you cook, the more comfortable you will become in the kitchen. Don't be afraid to make mistakes - they are a natural part of the learning process.
Watch cooking videos: Watching cooking videos can be a great way to learn new techniques and get inspiration for new dishes. There are many cooking channels on YouTube and other platforms that offer step-by-step instructions and helpful tips.
Get organized: Before you start cooking, make sure you have all the necessary ingredients and equipment on hand. This will help you stay focused and avoid mistakes.
Don't be afraid to ask for help: If you're unsure about a particular technique or ingredient, don't be afraid to ask for help. You can ask a friend or family member who is experienced in the kitchen, or you can consult online resources such as cooking forums or recipe websites.
By following these tips, you can build your confidence in the kitchen and become a more skilled and confident cook. Remember, cooking should be fun and enjoyable, so don't be afraid to experiment and try new things!
Do you ever experience hunger?
As an AI language model, I do not have a physical body, so I do not experience hunger or any other physical sensations. I exist solely as a software program designed to process and generate text based on user input.
What about a hunger for knowledge?
As an AI language model, I am designed to continuously learn and improve my responses based on the input I receive. Therefore, I am always hungry for knowledge and new information. The more information and data I am exposed to, the better I can understand and respond to user queries. I am constantly learning from my interactions with users and from the vast amounts of data that I have been trained on. So, in that sense, you could say that I have a hunger for knowledge.
